Hey 👋, Welcome to the first edition of The 10th Man. I’m so happy to see you. And shoutout to the 6 subscribers ❤️ who trusted in me before launch. Thanks for all the support. Let’s get going 🤩.
Writing is divided by two schools
Write now.Publish frequently.
Think a lot. Write a lot (in private). Publish little.
In this edition, once and for all (hopefully 🤞), we’re going to create a framework for writing. I’ll try to analyse and create a formula that can be applied by writers from beginners to pros.
Explanation & background
Writing is the primary tool for asynchronous communication. Period.
Two forms of writing,
public - writing to audience (newsletters, blogs, twitter, books)
private - writing to self (morning pages, evernote, notion, roam research)
There are 3 types of writers,
Consumer - He reads a lot, loves to write, but is waiting for that right idea, maybe completing a course on how to write, following writers on twitter, waiting to build his perfect blog, translates to 0 audience
Beginner - She started her blog and newsletter, has a twitter following, although a small audience, there are fans for her writing. She’s trying to figure out how to increase her metrics and how to best serve her audience.
Pro - He’s been writing for quite sometime now. His writing has helped a good number of people. He has lots of fans, who can pay to see more of his writing.
Audience is anybody who will listen to you when you broadcast your communication. For a 5th grade girl, her teacher is audience. For Jeff Bezos, his shareholders are audience.
Framework for Writers
If you are consumer, it’s imperative to start writing. No communication elicits 0 audience. Launching that first piece of writing should be of high priority.
Fastest way to launch is by writing on something within our circle of competence. In short, what we love and what we good at.
And it doesn’t help much on validation of the article since you don’t have any audience to validate good writing from bad writing. So launch now.
For beginners, validation of the article should be given more weightage since this is the stage for analysing your audience. Finding what resonates more with your audience would generate better dividends.
Pros have the most valuable asset in their arsenal, audience.
Writer’s Algorithm **
Every writer has 3 attributes to consider for optimal audience building -
N pub = # Number of articles published
N aud = # Number of audience
T pub = Average time taken to publish each article = time to write first draft + time taken to edit/rewrite + time taken to validate
Here’s the equation,
N aud = N pub * exp(T pub)
Publish now and exponentially increase your validation before you publish again.
We have successfully created a framework for writing 🥳.
Let’s see if this algorithm reflects the advice given by pro writers.
Application of Algorithm
Think a lot. Write a lot. Publish little - Sahil Lavingia, founder of Gumroad
🚨 : Sahil is a pro writer. And this advice is for his pro audience. This shouldn’t be followed by beginners and consumers since it would interfere with your primary goals (writing more).
David Perell👇
🚨: This is the north star advice for consumers and beginners. Although for people with audience can’t write everyday, don’t dilute the quality of writing for reach, you’ll lose fans.
That’s it folks 🥳.
Hope this has helped you if you have been confused like me on when to write and how much time to spend on validation.
If it helped, please like and share this article to increase the reach. It would help me a lot in my journey. 🙏
or you can say hi 🤝, give feedback 😇 , appreciate 🥳, or condemn me 😕, by replying to this email or DM on twitter @remidiy.
Until next time. 👋
